NutriSystem Desserts - How Do They Taste? Are They Really Good? What Are the Choices?

!±8± NutriSystem Desserts - How Do They Taste? Are They Really Good? What Are the Choices?

I get a lot of questions about NutriSystem's desserts. After all, getting to eat sweets is a big draw of this diet. And, sweets that are low in calories, fats, and carbs are pretty rare in a diet. But, how do they taste? Because what good is getting to eat desserts if they taste like cardboard or if your only choices are a few or undesirable ones? So, in the following article, I'll go over the NutriSystem dessert options, how they taste, and what your choices are.

Cakes: There are a couple of cake choices. These include the golden pound cake and the chocolate. Now, when I say cake, I don't mean the round, two layer variety. You don't get an entire, big round thing like you would on your birthday. You basically get a slice. The portions are small, but decent enough. And the taste is not too bad at all, although I prefer the golden. No, there's no icing on these. But, what do you expect? Its a diet. And, I'm just happy I'm getting to have my cake and eat it too.

NutriSystem Cookies: There are a few varieties here including chocolate chip, double chocolate almond, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, and white chocolate chunk. You know how some dietetic cookies have a cardboard like texture and they crumble horribly and make your mouth dry so that you feel like you can never get enough milk? These are not that bad and there isn't that fake sugar aftertaste. I find the chocolate chunk too strong tasting (a chocolate cookie with chocolate chips added in is overkill, in my opinion.) but, the white chocolate is my favorite. It has a nice, nutty, but sweet flavor.

NutriSystem Protein Bars And Candy Bars: There are two types of bars here. Basically, there is a granola, protein bar type option that comes in the following flavors: chocolate nougat with peanuts and caramel (kind of like snickers); chocolate delight (kind of like 3 musketeers); strawberry shortcake (kind of like a strawberry granola bar); chocolate peanut butter (kind of like Reece's); and blueberry lemon. (This one is my favorite. It is so light, fresh, and indulgent and is unique and different.)

In terms of the candy bar type options, there is a chocolate crunch bar (like Nestle's crunch) and a chocolate mint (like Andee's candies.)

Biscotti: I am very fond of the biscotti. If you've ever had Starbucks biscotti, you know that this is a crunchy, but sort of light treat that often has a nutty taste. There is an almond option and a chocolate macadamia nut. Both are very good, but I like the almond better.

NutriSystem Brownies: There are two choices here but both of them are chocolate. One is more of a chewy bar type and the other has a liquid center that you microwave. The liquid one tends to get messy and the soft liquid in the middle can be sort of a surprise if you are not expecting it.

Cocoa And Chocolate Pudding: The company also offers cocoa / hot chocolate and a pudding. Both are good, but nothing really different tasting that what you could get at the grocery store. The real difference lies in the fact that the company has somehow removed the excess carbs, sugar, fat and calories, which is a good thing.

Chocolates in the USA

!±8± Chocolates in the USA

USA dominates the market for chocolates as well. A simple chart shows that the maximum chocolates are made in the USA. Countries like Japan, and even Europe, pale in comparison to the amount of chocolates made and the number of chocolate manufacturing companies scattered all over the USA. Companies like Cadbury, Nestle, Hershey's, and Mars etc have had a hold in the chocolate industry for centuries nearly. Chocolate had after all been first discovered in the Central and South America - specifically in Mexico.

The Aztecs have been documented to be the first ones to have begun using chocolate around 1100 BC. As impossible as it sounds, chocolate had been there in our lives since time immemorial. So wouldn't it be obvious for us to consume a chocolate that would not poison us or harm us in any way? The tainted powered milk from China must have left a mark on everyone's mind. So, it is best not to opt for the products that boast of a cheaper price. It is quality what ultimately matters to us. Not the price.

The USA chocolate manufacturing companies take utmost care to make the chocolates using the natural resources, instead of the cheap duplicates easily available in the market. Most of the founders of these famous companies had been hand taught by their family members how to make the perfect chocolate. While certain Swiss brands can give the USA companies, a run for their money, Americans still remain at the top of the chocolate service. Some of the private companies feel that they have no one to account for but themselves. And unless, people are able to find fault with their products their production and manufacturing details would need to be kept under wraps. It is only when questioned by an organization determined to help the welfare of people, would these companies answer them.

Medifast Bars - An Overview Of Taste, Flavors And Nutrition

!±8± Medifast Bars - An Overview Of Taste, Flavors And Nutrition

I've lost over 75 pounds on medifast and I find that many people mistake this as a diet that's made up of mostly protein bars and shakes. Although both are very popular and tasty options, they are only one choice out of many. There are over 70 food choices on this diet. The bars just happen to be one of them.

That said, I understand why the bars are so popular. They are good, filling and extremely convenient. They are also guilt free at only about 150 calories each, with only about 10 grams of sugar, 11 grams of protein, and 5 grams of fiber. Admittedly, the portion size is a bit small at first glance, but they are more filling than you might guess. Here are the flavors available and my take on how they taste:

Chocolate Mint: One of my favorites. These remind me of the Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies. These have more of a crunchy, rather than chewy, taste. I have several of these per week.

Oatmeal Raisin: Many people feel this one taste like oatmeal raisin cookie dough. This one is probably most similar to what you would envision when think of a protein bar, sort of like the Quaker variety. This one has more of a chewy texture.

Lemon Yogurt: I'm not sure where the yogurt comes in here. I don't taste it. I can taste a lot of lemon flavor though, almost like the filling for lemon meringue pie. This bar has more of chewy texture as well.

Chocolate: This is your classic chocolate bar, but it has a crunchy texture which I really like. If I had to compare this to something you might recognize, I'd have to say a nestle crunch bar, mostly because of the texture, but the taste is pretty good too. I believe this is probably most people's favorite.

Fruit And Nut / S'more Granola: These are your typical granola type bars. I don't like granola in general, so these are my least favorite.

Caramel Nut: Again to use the candy bar analogy, this one is a bit like a Twix.

Peanut Butter: This one taste exactly as you might expect. Peanut taste with a crunchy texture. I love it. Also a favorite.

I really do love the medifast bars. They allow me a bit of a dessert or candy indulgence without the guilt.

Official Cookies by US States

!±8± Official Cookies by US States

While many states have an official bird, flag, and even an animal, few have an official state cookie. However, only two states in the union have claimed an official cookie. They are New Mexico and Massachusetts. And these are only recent developments. Discover the truly fascinating history behind these two state cookies and you'll begin to wonder why more states haven't petitioned for their own state goodies.

It was only recently, in 1989, that New Mexico took on the Bizcochito as its official state cookie. Pronounced bihs-ko-hee-tow, this cookie is a mlange of spices and tradition. As one food writer describes it, it is pure heaven. Miguel Hambriento, author of the popular The Foods of Old Mesilla, described them as "heaven's own little cakes blended delicately of sugar and spice, flour and wine and other secret ingredients, shaped by the swift fingers of the linda seora into small diamonds and baked until they are the delicate brown of the maiden's cheek kissed by the New Mexico sun." Can't you smell them baking right now?

A debate raged on in the House of Representatives in New Mexico when it came time to adopt the state cookie. Factions split off to plead their side as different parts of the state spelled the name of the cookie differently. One used an 's' and one used a 'z' in the spelling of bizcochito. Should it go into the history books as biscochito or bizcochito? In the end, the Senate decided to adopt it with the 'z' officially.

Apparently the bizcochito is a fairly easy cookie to make and is rich with tradition and lore.

The other state to adopt an official cookie is Massachusetts. In1997, this state took on the Toll House chocolate chip cookie as its own. The cookie gets its name from the inn where it was first baked. In 1930 Ruth Wakefield purchased an old toll house in Whitman, MA. It had been used in the centuries before to collect tolls and was a place a tired traveler could stop and get a meal. When Ruth began baking for her modern day guests, her desserts were quickly the celebration of all New England. One day she ran out of nuts while baking and cut up a Nestle semi-sweet chocolate bar and mixed it into the batter instead. From there, the Toll House cookie was born. Wakefield eventually sold her recipe to Nestle where they continue to this day to print her recipe on packages of semi-sweet morsels. The catch? Ruth asked for a lifetime supply of the semi-sweet chocolate for the rest of her life. Not a bad deal. The company went from marketing just the semi-sweet bar to semi-sweet morsels so their customers would have an easier time baking Wakefield's recipe. The next time you're in a grocery store, grab a bag of Nestle semi-sweet morsels and you'll see Wakefield's recipe for yourself.

If your state doesn't have an official cookie perhaps it's time to think about approaching your state representatives. That's how the other cookies got on the books. Is there a recipe your town is famous for? Whether it's the whoopee pie or a classic shortbread, each region has its own specialties. Maybe you're known to send cookies home with friends because they are so delicious. Why not concoct your own recipe? You could be the next Ruth Wakefield.

A Nutrisystem Food Menu - Examples of What You Eat on This Diet

!±8± A Nutrisystem Food Menu - Examples of What You Eat on This Diet

Some of the most common questions I get have to do with the NutriSystem food selections. People want to know what food choices they have and if the food is decent enough that I do not care to eat five times a day. I must say that of all the diets that have been, this time one of the most generous in terms of food choices and in terms of provision of convenience foods, snacks and dessert-type are, which would prohibit many diets. And by andlarge, most decisions are surprisingly decent. But to give you an idea of the type and quality of food available, I list three sample menus NutriSystem. The choice must come from the basic menu of women, but for the most part, many of the floors (men, diabetics, vegetarians, etc.) have a lot of the same foods.

A sample menu nutrisystem: Day One: The basics of this diet, you will need three meals and a snack or a dessert to eat. They alsoI ask you to add new pages to the three main meals. On this first day, we have rice crispy cereal. There is a bit 'as puffed rice, but it contains more protein. Since we want to add new pages, add half a banana. For lunch, we chose a turkey dog. For your part, you could choose a vegetable (carrot sticks) or salad. For an afternoon snack might be a good choice of pretzel sticks. For dinner, we go and Italian lasagna. The plan could make a nice carrot cakedessert.

Sample Menu Number Two: Since we had cereal yesterday, let's have the egg frittata today. We might add orange juice for our side. Fettuccine Alfredo might make a nice lunch with a side of tomatoes with Italian dressing. I really like the new "chocolate rainbow delights" for a snack because they are a lot like chocolate M&M's. I'm also pretty fond of the barbecue wrap for dinner. The sauce on this is both sweet with a kick of spice. The fudge brownie could round out the day for dessert.

Day Three On Nutrisystem: The cinnamon roll is one of my favorite nutrisystem breakfast foods. I'm still not sure how this item only has 160 calories with 7 grams of protein. It's a no brainer to add in milk as your side. The red beans, rice and sausage is also a good choice (since I like spicy foods.) For whatever reason, I like celery sticks with peanut butter on the side. For the afternoon snack, a chocolate crunch bar (a lot like nestle crunch) might be nice. (You can have this snack at anytime, but I've noticed that many have it in the afternoon.) For dinner, pizza is always a safe and good choice. A salad on the side is a pretty common choice. Almond biscotti might make a nice dessert.

So this was three days of meals just to give you an idea of what you're looking at, but there are over 150 food choices available and you can hand chose your menu to include only those foods that you like and want to include. So long as you're eating five choices per day and adding in sensible sides, you can switch the foods around and have the snack whenever you like. There is free counseling on the company's site in case you have any questions about the foods or menu.

Melamine, Pet Food and Our Food Safety

!±8± Melamine, Pet Food and Our Food Safety

In September 2008, the world was shocked at the sight of little babies in China attached to dialysis machines as they fight for their lives. Yet, the news of contaminated milk formula did not gain much attention until it was realized that the melamine problem is not only restricted to China only but has actually spread globally. However, no ill effects of melamine has been reported outside China and its territories.

Melamine is an organic compound with the official IUPAC name of 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine and the chemical formula of C3H6N6. It is a solid white-colored base, and is odorless. It is slightly soluble in water, stable, and not easily biodegradable.

Melamine is an industrial ingredient used to manufacture different kinds of products. It is used in combination with formaldehyde in the production of plastics and cleaning products. It is also combined with other compounds in the manufacture of fire retardants, pesticides, fertilizers, extra-strong concrete. Many things in our home have been manufactured with the use of melamine, from Formica counter tops, to certain fabrics, to plastic kitchenware (melaware).

Melamine has been thought to be of low risk to humans. According to this Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), melamine is "Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Chronic exposure may cause cancer or reproductive damage. Eye, skin and respiratory irritant." The toxicity of melamine, however, is low. To be "poisoned" by melamine, as determined by the so-called LD50, which is the lethal dose that will kill 50% of animals tested, is 3 g per kg of body weight (source: WHO).

According to studies cited in the Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), "melamine itself does not seem to be important industrial hazard except if decomposed by heat." Allergic and irritative dermatitis have been observed to result from occupational exposure to melamine but no permanent injury due to toxicity has been reported.

Like most industrial chemicals, toxicological tests on melamine have been performed using animals to determine its potential toxicity to humans which include the formation of calcareous deposits in the kidneys of female rats after 13 weeks of feeding melamine-containing food (WHO) and tumors in the urinary bladders of male rats fed diets with melamine for 103 weeks (IARC). According to this later study, melamine and cyanuric acid together caused renal toxicity in cats, pigs, and fish. The study concluded that "although melamine and cyanuric acid appeared to have low toxicity when administered separately, they induced extensive renal crystal formation when administered together.

However, there are significant gaps in our knowledge of melamine and its effect on our body. The safety/risk assessment conducted by the US FDA did not give any clear answers. In food products other than infant formula, the FDA concludes levels of melamine and melamine-related compounds below 2.5 parts per million (ppm) do not raise health concerns."

In the current melamine contamination scandal, however, it is not acute toxicity that caused the health problems. What is making the babies ill is chronic or subchronic toxicity. In addition, the toxicity of melamine increases when combined with another compound called cyanuric acid. Cyanuric acid theoretically non-toxic is present in food additives for animal feeds and in water disinfectants. Human exposure to cyanotic acid may be through swimming pool waters, drinking water, and fish. The combination of these two compounds can lead to acute toxicity, as it produces melamine cyanurate, a toxic substance in the form of insoluble crystals that then accumulated in vital organs, especially the kidneys, forming renal crystals or kidney stones that block kidney tubules.

It is speculated that manufacturers mixed melamine in milk formulas to increase the protein content of their products. Food products are tested for protein content by measuring nitrogen content. Looking at the chemical composition of melamine, we can see that it has high nitrogen content.

This not the first time that melamine was used deliberately as protein content enhancer although this is the most deadly so far. In 2007, many cats and dogs died of kidney failure as a result of the formation of renal crystals or kidney stones. The cause of the renal toxicity was traced to melamine which was detected in pet food. Melamine-cyanuric acid cocrystals were found in the animals' kidneys and the case was well-publicized. It is therefore highly unlikely that the perpetrators who tainted the baby formulas are unaware of the hazards of melamine consumption.

But this year's melamine scandal was more shocking than last year's because it affected and killed little babies. The following is a summary of events.

September 2008 - Fourteen babies in the Chinese province of Gansu were reported to be suffering from kidney stones, a very rare occurrence in young children. The suspected cause was the milk formula they were drinking. More and more cases of ill babies were reported all over China. The milk powder in question was manufactured by the Sanlu Group.

The US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) issued a health information advisory on infant formulas. The advisory "is to assure the American public that there is no known threat of contamination in infant formula manufactured by companies that have met the requirements to sell infant formula in the United States... The following manufacturers have met the necessary FDA requirements for marketing milk-based infant formulas in the United States: Abbott Nutritionals, Mead Johnson Nutritionals, Nestle USA, PBM Nutritionals, and Solus Products LLC."

The director of the Chinese agency General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine resigned as investigations showed that the melamine contamination is quite widespread. Tests showed that milk products of up to 22 dairy producers were contaminated with melamine.

The US FDA updated the advisory to issue a list of contaminated products manufactured in Taiwan, including Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products.

The New Zealand Food safety Authority found melamine in China's most popular sweet White Rabbit Creamy Candies.

The UK chocolate maker Cadbury recalled its Chinese-made products after chocolates from their Beijing factory tested positive for melamine, according to this International Herald Tribune report.

October 2008 - The problem spread to Europe. Chinese candies contaminated with melamine were found in an Asian supermarket in Germany. There were also reports of contaminated food products in Belgium and the Netherlands. The US FDA detected melamine in Blue Cat Flavor Drinks.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a warning against the consumption of Sherwood Brands Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate Coins which tested positive for melamine. It was not clear how the contamination occurred.

The numbers of ill babies rose up to tens of thousands. Eighty percent of those affected were below the age of 2. Four cases proved to be fatal. China also recalled not only powdered milk but also liquid milk manufactured during the last couple of months.

Hong Kong found excessive amounts of melamine in eggs coming from mainland China. Officials suspected that the contamination came through melamine in the chicken feeds. They have ordered testing of all animal feeds and poultry products from the mainland. "Hong Kong has imposed a limit on melamine use in foods, restricting it to no more than 2.5 milligrams per kilogramme. Melamine found in food meant for children under three and lactating mothers should be no higher than one mg per kg", according to the BBC.

November 2008 - The US FDA issued a nationwide alert warning for Chinese import food products and found traces of melamine in one baby formula made by an American manufacturer. The regulatory body claimed the contamination was accidental but did not go into details.

December 2008 - Food Standards Australia New Zealand issued a list of products contaminated with melamine.

The US FDA tried to assure the American public that American-produced formulas are safe from contamination. "To date, FDA tests have found extremely low levels of melamine in one infant formula sample and extremely low levels of cyanuric acid in another. The levels were so low (well below 1 ppm) that they do not pose a health risk to infants." The FDA made public the test results on domestic infant formula. Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with Iron from Nestle contained very low amounts of melamine. In addition, cyanotic acid was found in one type of Enfamil from the manufacturer Mead Johnson.

On the part of the Chinese health authorities, they are trying to repair the damage through recalls and arrests of those responsible. Developing countries, however, which do not have the means to test import products, are at risk of becoming dumping grounds of contaminated products.

The best strategy is to simply avoid melamine at all costs. Consumers are advised to be vigilant about what they buy and consume, most especially products consumed by children in large quantities. These include milk and milk products, chocolates, sweets, and biscuits.

!±8± The Top 5 Retro sweets you can not get more, but you can

Although not widely available as are many favorites Gobstoppers, sugar mice, sorbet and toffees seeds produced now.

But other classics are unfortunately victims of time and "progress."
Here are our Top 5 list of sweets that you go all teary-eyed, but we can no longer receive:

Texas Bar
Texas is our most popular chocolate bars. Texas was a hard nougat center in milk chocolate. It 'been a Macintosh computer (now madeNestlé).

Founded in 1975, Texans enjoyed great success until the miners' strike in 1980. The problem, he believes, is that the Texan bars were produced in Halifax in Yorkshire, and because of miners block major roads and landmarks, no one has been able to make the ingredients for the Texans at the factory and the production is set not to start.

That is, until the end of 2005, when the Texans were brought back for a spell in six weeks, but despite selling like hotCake, which was, and is no longer available once again.

Aztec Bar
Powered by Cadbury and launched in 1967. We thought wrong, seems to have been created to tackle the World Cup 1970 (which, when Brazil scored a fabulous goal - Carlos Alberto, I think) the same. Aztec disappeared in 1978, even though we said again briefly, just like the Texans for the year 2000.

Aztec was a praline-board (think soft nougat) and caramel covered with milk chocolate. SoundsDid you know? Simply could not compete with the largest bar of all time - the Mars Bar (Mars and plays Aztecs were almost identical!)

Spangles
Glitter came from Mars and was launched in 1950 to life. Fruit-flavored candies were placed - in a tube (as well as cough "Tunes"). There have been off the market back in early 1980, but were introduced in the mid-1990 due to strong demand again. However, it seems that the buying public because it recalledSpangle did not purchase in large quantities at first and sweets have been withdrawn.

There were a number of varieties Spangles. Glitter it came in a tube of 5 flavors - strawberry, orange, lemon and lime, pineapple and currants. Old English Spangles falls were an eclectic mix of retro-sweet taste of caramel, pear, mint hypocrisy, cough drops, and licorice.

Spangle seasoned individual tube were launched during the yearof mandarin, mint, mint, sugar, barley and perhaps most famous cola.

Pacers
A little 'as the Mint Opal Fruits (Starburst we refuse to call it!) And made of the same company, Mars .. They were soft and chewy and very tasty. He started all white and then added the 3 green stripes producers.

And then it stopped in 1980 for unknown reasons. But it certainly can not, because they were not popular.

MintCracknell
Another bar we think was made by Macintosh computers. There was chocolate, which actually came in two pieces. It 'was the make-up of a delicate mint center (bright green and almost like eating broken glass) in milk chocolate. I'm not sure if it went ... but it certainly is - apparently due to difficulties with production. The fact that he used to cut out his tongue does not help!

And if this were not enough, Macintosh, also coffee and orange Cracknell Cracknell - even ifNobody seems to remember one of the two.

You can still Mint Cracknell in South Africa we are told.

!±8± Lean Cuisine meals nutrisystem people also had to do? Are they the same? I'll tell you

I receive many emails from people who think that Lean Cuisine meals nutrisystem are on the same appear, and that only the version of the food that you buy at the supermarket. This is a common mistake, but it is not true. The following article will tell you why.

These two diets are from different manufacturers: Lean Cuisine has started as a sort of offshoot of food Stouffer. The parent company (Nestlé) apparentlywanted to offer a healthy alternative for Stouffer's frozen food line. The line was founded in 1981.

Nutrisystem on the other hand, was founded in 1972. E 'managed by the United States too, but it is an entirely different product that is produced by a different company. In fact, these two competitors. There are some similarities and differences between them, which I will discuss below.

Some important differences between these two diets: slimThe kitchen is included in the frozen ground and lunch. It 'a good variety in food. For example, Italian, Spanish and Asian cuisine are all represented here. And the food is low in calories, although personally I think they may be a bit 'high in carbohydrates and sodium.

NutriSystem also offers some frozen foods. But there are some ready meals in the lineup. There are over 150 a good choice and offer much more popular"Comfort food" options like pizza, hamburgers, tacos, fajitas, chocolate cake, etc. They also offer breakfast, snacks and sweets, which are areas in which Lean Cuisine are down a bit 'short. The food is also a bit 'of carbohydrates and calories and a little' higher protein content, which may be important, though. You, if the goal is to get into ketosis for weight loss more quickly, the company also offers free help and advice, which I find very useful.

AnotherThe difference is that you get to the kitchen lean in some grocery stores, and usually must be ordered online nutrisystem. There is a debate over whether there is a price difference. Many believe that the supermarket options cost less, but not always pan to be the case. If you have a package to go out and enjoy the nutrisystem coupons that are often offered, you can usually get the price up a bit 'more than $ 2.00 per meal, which is quite similar, ifdo not cut again.

It depends really, what diet you will feel the effect, and decent tasting food choices for the time and money you are going to put into it. This can vary from person to person.
